The Tony Awards are regarded as 'the Oscars of the theater world', a reputation earned in part due to the glamour and reach of these prestigious awards. However, this enviable reputation belies the fact that the Tonys only actually recognise achievement in Broadway theatre, in New York. Plays produced and staged in other parts of the USA, or overseas, are ineligible for these awards.
